The first thing that caught my attention when I started reading this was the setting - Louisiana. It's small of a deal but its just that I don't get to read books, let alone YA books, set in here. :D
Obviously,
The Summer I Became A Nerd is a light, fun read with a simple plot. Maddie, a girl leading a double life -
the cheerleader and the nerd - learned an important lesson over the summer. She was faring fine with her secret identity until Logan, a cute nerd who works at the local comic bookstore entered her life. To what extent can she lie to people around her, or bigger yet, to herself?
The main element that I really enjoyed was the larping part of the book. I was introduced to this world that I didn't even know exists! There were annoying Maddie moments but in my opinion, those were vital to stress the lesson she needed to learn. The prejudice about high school hierarchy was presented in the book. Why can't cheerleaders be nerds? I don't see the harm in that.
Moral of the story: Be true to yourself. Throughout your life, people are going to judge you and you can't please everybody. But you can make yourself happy :)
